THCP

THCP, a newly discovered cannabinoid, can be found in very low amounts in certain strains of marijuana. It can also be made in a laboratory by altering the legal hemp-derived CBD. In 2019, it was accidentally discovered by Italian researchers during an analysis of a specific strain of marijuana.

The commercial success of Delta 8 THC has led to the discovery of a range of hemp-derived cannabinoids that are comparable to traditional marijuana’s Delta 9 THC. These cannabinoids, including Delta 8, Delta 10, THC, HHC, and THC-O, are all very popular in the cannabis market.

THCP could provide a powerful new high for recreational users. However, it could also have therapeutic benefits for patients with medical conditions. The potential benefits of THCP are still being explored by researchers.

What Is THCP?

THCP, an organic cannabinoid or phytocannabinoid, is very similar to Delta 9 THC (the most common cannabinoid found in marijuana strains). Although THCP was first discovered in a specific strain of marijuana, it can be chemically modified from CBD taken from legal hemp plants to make it.

It is necessary to make enough THCP in a laboratory to be able to sell it. There’s not enough in the cannabis flower to extract it economically.

The molecular structure of THCP is quite different from that of Delta 9. It has a longer, alkyl sidechain (the tail of atoms that extends from the bottom of most of the molecule). The seven carbon atoms in the side chain are larger than those in Delta 9, which allows THCP to bind with CB1 and CB2 receptors in human CB1. This makes its effects more effective in the brain and body.

The 2019 study of a group of Italian academics, which introduced THCP to the world, has essentially provided all the information we have about THCP. We don’t know much about THCP side effects or safety, as there has not been any research done on humans.

Does THCP Get You High?

Researchers from Italy discovered that organic THCP binds 33x more strongly with the CB1 receptor than Delta 9 THC. This is likely due to its extended seven-atom side chains. The CB1 receptor, which is the most important receptor for cannabinoid effects, is also the best. However, THCP binds better to the CB2 receptor.

However, THCP is 33 times more effective than traditional Delta 9. Each person reacts to each cannabinoid differently. There will be a limit on any cannabinoid’s ability to stimulate the endocannabinoid receptors. Although some of THCP’s 33x higher binding affinity might be lost on already-overloaded receptors, it seems probable that THCP will still be more potent than Delta 9 THC for many people. You might be able to get very high.

Scientists who identified THCP believe that small amounts of THCP could be responsible for marijuana strains that seem more intoxicating than others that contain similar or higher levels of Delta 9 THC. To emphasize the effects of THCP, cannabis breeders are likely to create strains that contain higher levels of THCP in the future.

What Are the Effects of THC-P?

Because THCP binds so well to cannabinoid receptors it is likely to produce effects similar to or even stronger than Delta 9 THC. To test the cannabinoid’s effects on mice, scientists discovered THCP through standard experiments. Lower doses of THCP resulted in mice experiencing reduced activity, and then they experienced catalepsy (a state similar to a trance) at higher doses. THCP was also effective at lower doses.

THCP’s ability to bind with cannabinoid receptors could make it extremely valuable. It could be used to help people sleep, relieve pain, and nausea, and ease their anxiety. Although THCP is still being studied, it appears that its unmatched binding affinity to human receptors makes it a valuable treatment for these and other conditions.

THCP may be found in small amounts in marijuana strains that were previously unknown. This could explain some of the cannabis’ healing properties. Researchers who discovered THCP in 2019 stated that they had found a THC-like phytocannabinoid, which may help to explain other pharmacological effects than those attributed solely to Delta 9 THC.

The powerful binding affinity of THCP can also increase the unpleasant side effects of THC, such as dry mouth, eyes, anxiety, and paranoia. This could pose new risks to users. We are still guessing until we see the human subject research results.

Is THC-P Likely to Be Detected in a Drug Test?

It is not known if THCP will make you fail a drug test. This is because it hasn’t been thoroughly studied. However, there’s no reason to believe THCP doesn’t produce THC-degrading products in the body. These would be detected by police and employers using standard drug tests.

The bottom line is that no one knows what the future holds. If your employer tests for marijuana use, it is important to avoid THCP and all forms of THC-derived cannabinoids.

Is THC-P Legal? Where Can It Be Purchased?

Congress authorized hemp and all its derivatives and compounds in the 2018 Farm Bill. As long as they contained less than 0.3 percent of Delta 9 THC, it was legalized. A federal appeals court ruled that Delta 8 THC was a legal product in May 2022. This decision seems to apply to all hemp-derived products, protecting sellers, manufacturers, and users from federal enforcement.

States have taken steps to regulate the sale of hemp-derived cannabinoids on retail shelves. Some states have restricted or banned the availability of Delta 8 THC. Others could follow Oregon’s lead, and ban all “artificially-derived cannabinoids”, including THCP.

THCP is a new product in the hemp-derived cannabis cannabinoid market. It can be confusing to buy it. Most products that have THCP in their names contain THCP mixed or blended with other hemp-derived cannabinoids, such as Delta 8 THC.

THCP products can be purchased through many of the same online retailers as other hemp-derived cannabis products. You can also find them in convenience stores, gas stations, and vape shops.
