What is THCP?
THCP, or phytocannabinoid, is an organic cannabinoid very similar to Delta-9 THC, the cannabinoid found in most marijuana strains. THCP was first discovered in a specific marijuana strain, but it can also be produced in a laboratory by chemically manipulating CBD from hemp plants.
To make enough THCP for a commercial product, it must be produced in a laboratory, as there is not enough in the actual cannabis flower. The molecular structure of THCP is very different from that of Delta-9 THC. It has a larger alkyl side chain, which is the “tail” of atoms extending from the bottom of its largest part. The oversized side chains, with seven carbon atoms instead of just five in Delta-9, allow THCP’s effects to be stronger in the body and brain.
The study conducted by a group of Italian academics in 2019 is the source of almost all the information we have about THCP. We know very little about THCP’s safety or side effects because there has been no human research.
Does THCP Get You High?
Researchers in Italy who discovered organic THCP observed that it binds 33 times more efficiently with the CB1 receptor than Delta-9 THC, likely because its side chain is longer by seven atoms. CB1 is the main cannabinoid receptor responsible for creating psychoactive effects. Additionally, THCP also binds more readily to the CB2 receptor.
This doesn’t necessarily mean that THCP is 33 times more stronger than Delta-9 THC. Each person will react differently to each cannabinoid, and there is likely a limit to the ability of any cannabinoid to stimulate endocannabinoid receptors. While some of THCP’s 33x higher binding affinity might be wasted on cannabinoid-overloaded receptors, many people will still likely find THCP to be more potent. It might get you very high.
Scientists who identified THCP claim that the small amounts of THCP present in certain marijuana strains may explain why these strains are more intoxicating than others with higher levels of Delta-9 THC. In the future, cannabis breeders are likely to create strains with higher concentrations of THCP to enhance its effects.
What Are the Effects Of THCP?
THCP binds to cannabinoid receptors so strongly that it is likely to produce effects very similar to Delta-9 THC but possibly even more pronounced. Scientists who discovered THCP used standard cannabis mouse tests to measure the physical effects of this new cannabinoid. Lower doses of THCP caused mice to show reduced activity, and at higher doses, they developed catalepsy—a trance-like state. THCP also appeared to be effective as a pain reliever at higher doses.
THCP’s ability to bind with cannabinoid receptors in the human body is what makes it so valuable. It could be used to treat pain and nausea and help people sleep. THCP has not yet been fully studied, but its unmatched affinity for binding to human receptors likely makes it a valuable treatment option.
The tiny amounts of THCP found in previously unknown marijuana strains maybe the reason for cannabis’ healing properties. Scientists who discovered THCP in 2019 wrote that the “discovery of a stronger THC-like phytocannabinoid” may shed light on several pharmacological effects in marijuana not attributable solely to Delta-9 THC.
The powerful binding affinity of THCP can also magnify undesirable THC side effects, such as dry mouth, dry eyes, anxiety, and paranoia. It may even present new risks to users. We can only guess until we see results from human research.

THCP vs. THC-O
THCP is a very new substance. There haven’t been many serious studies or real-world observations describing the experience with THCP alone. Since most commercial products containing stronger THCP are a blend of THC analogs, not many people have tried it on their own.
We do not yet know enough to tell you how you will feel when using THCP compared to THC-O or how THCP compares to other hemp-derived cannabinoids such as delta-8, delta-10, and HHC. Most of the THCP products available today contain a mixture of delta-8 with THCP or a cocktail of several hemp-derived cannabinoids. When a cannabinoid is blended with two or three others, it’s difficult to determine its specific effects.
The same researchers who found THCP in the cannabis sample also found cannabidiphorol (CBDP). CBDP is a variant of cannabidiol, but it has a side chain with seven atoms like THCP. CBDP could, in the future, offer greater therapeutic benefits than CBD due to its increased bioactivity.
Does THCP Appear in a Drug Test?
It is not known if THCP can cause you to fail a drug test. There is no reason to believe that THCP wouldn’t produce THC breakdown products that would be detected by standard drug testing used by employers and the police.
It’s pretty straightforward: no one can be sure. If your employer tests you for marijuana use, avoid THCP and all other forms of THC, as well as hemp-derived cannabinoids (except safe CBD).

Congress legalized all hemp compounds and derivatives as long as they contained less than 0.3 percent Delta-9 THC. A federal appeals court confirmed in May 2022 that delta-8 THC was a legal hemp product. This decision seems to apply to other hemp-derived goods, too, protecting manufacturers, sellers, and users from federal enforcement.
However, states have taken action to restrict the sale of hemp-derived cannabinoids to licensed dispensaries or to prevent them from being sold on retail shelves. Some states have restricted or banned the sale of delta-8 THC. Others could follow Oregon and prohibit all “artificially derived cannabinoids,” which includes THCP.
THCP has a niche in the market for hemp-derived cannabinoids, but buying it can be confusing. The majority of products that list THCP in their name contain THCP combined with cheaper (and more common) hemp-derived cannabinoids such as delta-8 THC or a mixture of several hemp-derived cannabinoids.
